Tank storage facilities are major hubs in Vopak's logistic services. They have various functions in the logistic chains for chemicals, petroleum products, gases and vegetable oils.

Essentially, three types of terminals can be identified:

• Break bulk / make bulk terminals;
  • Mostly located in important ports, where goods are directly transshipped or stored while waiting for onward transportation;
    
• Industrial terminals;
  
  • Linked to production plants in order to supply or receive goods directly to or from these plants;
    
• Distribution terminals;
  
  • Located close to areas of consumption, allowing for efficient delivery from stocking location to customer.

Although terminals can have a combination of functions, in all cases the fact that expensive infrastructure and other common facilities can be shared among multiple parties gives a distinct cost advantage over the use of dedicated facilities.

In addition to storage, the terminals offer many extra services, such as blending, drumming heating and purging with nitrogen. All terminals are well equipped to handle ships, while some have rail connections. Tank trucks and ISO containers can be handled thoughout the network.
